Dental disease is a very common medical diagnosis in veterinary medicine. It can affect all organ systems detrimentally, most importantly the kidneys and heart. It can cause bad breath, infection, and pain. Westlake Animal Hospital offers full dental services, including radiology and extractions. All of our dental procedures are performed under general anesthesia.

Dental Prophy-An ultrasonic scaler is used to remove dental tartar and bacteria from your pet’s teeth and from deep gingival pockets. A polish is then applied to help protect the enamel of the teeth. Dental prophylaxis should be performed annually.

Digital Radiology-Dental radiographs may be taken of your pet’s teeth if the veterinarian suspects there may be a problem with a tooth or oral cavity. The prompt results with digital radiographs allow for immediate action, including extractions, if deemed necessary.

Extractions-Extractions of a tooth may be recommended for your pet due to a bad infection or extreme laxity of the tooth. Nerve blocks are performed to help with the pain of extractions, as well as most pets will go home with anti-inflammatories. Depending on the size and nature of the tooth, sutures may be placed over the area, and your pet may go home with special feeding instructions.
